Water Sports on the Animas River
Several outfitters in Durango offer a variety of rafting and kayaking experiences on the Animas River, which runs from Silverton down the North Animas Valley, through downtown and onward towards New Mexico. For the adventuresome, the river flow peaks after snowmelt, usually sometime in May. Rapids through downtown are typically Class III or less. On the Upper Animas, they're true Class V and best run with professional outfitters and guides. When the river ebbs during the summer, locals put in at 32nd Street and tube down to Santa Rita Park...a great way to beat the summer heat!
